Unmasking Autism, One Gentle Routine at a Time
Welcome to my Unmasking Autism series. This is where I share what I'm learning as I begin to understand my autistic experience and gently come home to myself. These posts are personal, honest, and written with tenderness for the parts of me that have spent years surviving.
One of the biggest lessons autism has taught me is this:
If a routine is too complicated, I probably won't do it consistently.
For years, I thought the answer to better skin was buying more products.
More serums.
More treatments.
More masks.
More steps.
More... everything.
Social media convinced me that healthy skin required a ten-step routine every single morning and night.
The reality?
Just thinking about that many steps exhausted me.
As I've learned more about my autistic brain and my nervous system, I've realized that simplifying isn't settling. It's supporting myself.
And that mindset has completely changed the way I care for my skin.
Simplicity Is a Form of Self-Compassion
One of the biggest parts of unmasking autism has been giving myself permission to stop forcing myself into routines that don't actually fit my life.
I used to think I needed more discipline.
Now I realize I needed more compassion.
Because when my capacity is low, my goal isn't perfection.
My goal is consistency.
There are days when I have plenty of energy and can enjoy taking my time.
And there are days when brushing my teeth, washing my face, and changing into pajamas feels like a complete accomplishment.
Both days deserve grace.
Instead of building a skincare routine around my best days, I've started building one around my hard days.
Because those are the routines that actually stick.
Why Korean Skincare Changed Everything
Over the past year, I've slowly fallen in love with Korean skincare.
Not because it's trendy.
Because it works.
The products I've tried have been incredibly gentle, deeply hydrating, and surprisingly affordable compared to many luxury skincare brands.
As someone whose skin can be sensitive, I've noticed a huge difference in how calm and healthy my skin feels.
Rather than relying on harsh treatments that leave my face feeling stripped, I've found products that focus on supporting my skin barrier and keeping my skin hydrated.
My skin has never looked healthier.
More importantly...
My routine has never felt easier.
Fewer Products. Better Results.
One thing I've learned is that every product should have a purpose.
Instead of layering product after product because someone online said I "needed" it, I've started asking myself:
What does my skin actually need?
For me, that's usually pretty simple.
A gentle cleanser
Hydration
Moisture
Sunscreen during the day
That's it.
When I use products that are high quality and actually work for my skin, I don't feel the need to compensate with ten extra steps.
Quality over quantity.
Every single time.
Less Decision Fatigue
One thing people don't always talk about with autism is how exhausting decisions can become.
Even tiny ones.
Which cleanser?
Which toner?
Which serum?
Which moisturizer?
Which mask?
Which oil?
Which order?
When your brain is already processing a thousand other things, those decisions add up.
By simplifying my skincare routine and using products I already know and trust, I've removed so much unnecessary mental clutter.
My routine has become automatic.
And that means I'm actually more consistent.
Healthy Skin Starts With Consistency
Ironically, simplifying my routine has given me better skin than chasing the "perfect" routine ever did.
Because skincare isn't about what you do once.
It's about what you do every day.
A simple routine that I can stick to 365 days a year will always beat an elaborate routine I only manage once a week.
That's been true for my skin...
And honestly, it's becoming true for every area of my life.
Honoring My Capacity
One of the greatest gifts of unmasking autism has been learning to honor my capacity instead of constantly fighting it.
Some days I have more energy.
Some days I don't.
Neither version of me deserves less care.
So instead of asking,
"What's the perfect skincare routine?"
I've started asking,
"What's the kindest routine I can actually maintain?"
Those are two very different questions.
And I think the second one has changed my life.
My Favorite Korean Skincare Products
If you're looking for simple Korean skincare products that have genuinely transformed my skin, I've linked the products I've personally used and loved in my Amazon storefront.
These are products I continue reaching for because they're effective, gentle, and make my skincare routine feel sustainable instead of overwhelming.
Whether you're simplifying your routine, supporting sensitive skin, or just getting started with Korean skincare, I hope these favorites help you build a routine that works for your life, not someone else's.
What I'm Learning
Unmasking autism isn't only about understanding sensory overload or learning how to regulate.
Sometimes it's about giving yourself permission to make everyday life easier.
To choose routines that support you instead of overwhelm you.
To stop chasing perfection.
To honor your capacity.
For me, simplifying my skincare routine has become one small but meaningful way of saying,
"I deserve care that feels sustainable."
And I think that's one of the most beautiful parts of healing.

jd
Thank you for being here. If any part of this resonated, I hope you feel a little less alone. I'm still learning, still unmasking, and still choosing compassion over shame one moment at a time.
