The Truth About Rabbit Care Before You Adopt
This little corner of my blog is dedicated to Honey, the sweetest bunny who completely stole my heart. Follow along as I share our adventures in rabbit care, habitat upgrades, enrichment ideas, favorite products, and all the funny, heartwarming moments that come with learning life through the eyes of one very spoiled bunny.
I need to say something that feels really important.
Honey is ridiculously cute.
Like... offensively cute.
The tiny nose twitches.
The floppy naps.
The zoomies.
The binkies.
The little paws.
The ears.
The fluff.
He's basically a walking argument for why everyone should own a bunny.
Except... he's not.
As much as I adore Honey, I hope my blog never convinces someone to adopt a rabbit without first understanding what rabbit ownership actually looks like.
Because the reality is this:
Rabbits are not easy pets.
They're incredible pets.
But they deserve owners who are prepared to meet their needs.
Rabbits Are More Than Cute
Before Honey came home, I spent a lot of time researching rabbit care.
And then...
I brought Honey home and realized I still had so much to learn.
Rabbits aren't "starter pets."
They aren't low maintenance.
They aren't animals you put in a small cage and visit a few times a day.
They are intelligent, emotional, curious little creatures with very specific physical and mental needs.
The more I learn about rabbits, the more respect I have for them.
They Need Space
One of the biggest misconceptions about rabbits is that they're cage animals.
They aren't.
Honey spends much of his day exploring, stretching, running, hopping, and investigating everything around him.
Watching him move freely has made me realize just how important space is for rabbits.
Their bodies were designed to run.
To jump.
To explore.
To choose where they rest.
Whether you create a dedicated bunny room, a large exercise pen, or a free-roam setup, rabbits need enough room to express their natural behaviors.
A tiny cage isn't a home.
It's confinement.
Hay Isn't Just Food. It's Life.
One of the first things I learned is that rabbits need access to fresh hay all day, every day.
Hay supports their digestion.
It keeps their digestive system moving.
It helps wear down their continuously growing teeth.
It provides enrichment because they naturally love to forage.
I never imagined hay would become such a central part of my life.
Now I buy it in quantities that make me question my life choices.
Honey approves.
Enrichment Is Essential
Honey doesn't just need food.
He needs things to do.
He loves chewing.
Digging.
Exploring.
Tossing toys.
Finding treats.
Investigating cardboard boxes.
Every day I learn that keeping his mind busy is just as important as keeping his tummy full.
An enriched bunny is often a happier bunny.
And honestly...
Watching him discover something new is one of my favorite parts of having him.
Rabbits Are Surprisingly Clean
One thing that surprised me the most?
How clean rabbits like to be.
Honey uses his litter box incredibly well.
But keeping that litter box clean isn't optional.
It's part of keeping him healthy.
A clean litter area helps reduce odor, supports good hygiene, and creates an environment where he can comfortably do what rabbits naturally prefer to do.
I've quickly learned that litter box maintenance has become part of my daily rhythm.
And I'm completely okay with that.
Because he deserves a clean home.
Veterinary Care Matters
Another thing people don't always realize is that rabbits require veterinary care from professionals who understand rabbits.
Not every veterinarian treats rabbits.
Finding an experienced rabbit veterinarian before an emergency happens is one of the smartest things a bunny owner can do.
That's something I was grateful to learn early.
They're Worth Every Bit of the Effort
Now, after saying all of that...
Would I adopt Honey again?
Without hesitation.
One hundred times over.
Because every bit of effort has been met with ten times the joy.
Watching him flop over because he feels safe.
Seeing his little zoomies across the room.
Feeling him become more confident every day.
None of that can really be explained.
It has to be experienced.
Please Adopt Responsibly
If Honey inspires you to consider adopting a rabbit, that makes me so happy.
But my hope is that he inspires you to learn first.
Read everything you can.
Watch rabbit care videos.
Talk to experienced rabbit owners.
Understand the commitment.
Prepare their space before they come home.
Learn about their diet.
Understand enrichment.
Find a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.
And if, after all of that, you still feel excited...
Then maybe there's a bunny somewhere waiting to choose you, just like Honey chose me.
Because every rabbit deserves a family that's ready for them.
Not just enchanted by their cuteness.
